On a envie de dire que ce sont des « souvenirs de Sète ». Et il s’agit effectivement de cela, de ce qui n’est plus et ne fut que durant ces journées et soirées d’arpentage de la ville en tous sens, à la recherche de. De quoi, finalement ? Un peu de Sète, sans doute, beaucoup de Juan Manuel Castro Prieto indéniablement et encore davantage d’image, d’images.

Il y a d’une part une ville vraiment singulière, inclassable, ce qui justifie mieux que toute autre sans doute que l’on prenne le risque de la confronter, à un rythme annuel, au regard d’un photographe chaque année différent. Elle a l’avantage, dans sa diversité de géographies entre mer et collines d’étager une rare variété de paysages et d’accueillir des populations qui semblent n’en faire qu’à leur guise, des gens de caractère, comme leur ville en somme. Car Sète a vraiment du caractère, que les photographes tentent de cerner, dans laquelle ils s’emploient à décrypter des signes et des énigmes pour finir par y trouver parfaitement leur compte en constatant que, tellement multiple, elle s’accorde à leur univers.
En face, ou à côté, un photographe qui, lui non plus, ne manque pas de caractère. Un de ces techniciens hors pair qui ne s’intéressent pas à la technique mais qui savent la plier à leurs désirs, se jouer d’elle pour ouvrir des failles dans le monde et qui pratique mieux que tout autre la modalité du révéler.
Dans révéler, chez Castro Prieto, il y a toujours une étymologie qui, autant que l’apparition de l’image s’ancre dans le rêve. Et celui qui est venu à Sète est avant tout celui qui a publié « Extraños », autrement dit étranges, un livre dans lequel il a rassemblé des visions qui sont à la fois déroutantes et belles et constituent de fait une savante métaphore de la photographie.
Choisissant de travailler en couleur, en argentique, en négatif, avec une chambre grand format, c’est à dire en convoquant ce que la technique photographique offre de plus précis et de plus traditionnellement photographique, Juan Manuel Castro Prieto s’est doté d’outils qu’il va, comme à son habitude, appliquer dans une surprenante gamme de possibles. Du constat à la distorsion, du document raffiné au pur onirisme. Et il n’hésite pas, avec un plaisir sous-jacent qui traverse l’ensemble du travail, à cultiver le paradoxe. Qui pense couleur à Sète imagine immédiatement la ville solaire, la profondeur des bleus, des blancs purs, des rouges profonds, une palette luxuriante de bords de Méditerranée. C’est au contraire une proposition en demi-teinte, vibrante, assoupie, apaisée mais ouverte au risque de quelques stridences, que le photographe décline entre deux visions de mer amples, riches de camaïeux dans lesquels bleu et gris se marient pour imposer un univers de matière, impressionniste et sensuel. Nous voici bien loin de toutes les utilisations de la chambre pour obtenir une précision et un piqué impeccables de netteté, mais c’est pourtant cet outil, utilisé apparemment à contre emploi, qui permet d’obtenir ce résultat somptueux.
Cet indispensable cadre marin bien mis en place, la liberté est ensuite totale. Et la curiosité peut se laisser aller à saisir deux dames discutant sur leur chaise sur le trottoir en plein soleil aussi bien qu’une pince de crabe suspendue à un fil, des ex-voto à Notre Dame de la Salette tout comme une miniature des joutes, un capharnaüm « interdit aux chiants » sans oublier un poulpe dessiné sur le sol dans une richesse de matière et de lumière rare. Car il n’est point de Sète sans poulpe, c’est bien connu.
On ne saurait oublier les rencontres et les portraits, entre autres la série de jeunes artistes sétois dans leurs ateliers et la construction, au travers d’eux, d’un univers vraiment étrange, entre accumulation et brocante, mémoire et rêve matérialisé, fantaisie et œuvre en devenir qui va dialoguer avec la vision féérique d’un entrepôt oublié habité par le temps et la poussière, espace rythmé d’objets qui deviennent à la fois personnages et sculptures. Là aussi, l’attention à la lumière et la façon dont elle est convoquée pour fabriquer le monde jette le trouble, nous projette dans un univers et nous tient à distance par un jeu d’illusionnisme.
Pour dresser son portrait de la ville Juan Manuel Castro Prieto a trouvé une infinité d’images existantes, utilisées ou oubliées, qu’il a rephotographiées à sa manière, leur donnant un nouveau sens. Elles deviennent, tout comme les traces de pas inscrits par la peinture blanche sur le sol, des manières de repères et une façon de dire que tout cela n’est qu’image, signe, qu’il faut lire la ville car elle se donne
comme une énigme à décrypter. Une des forces de cette vision est aussi d’avoir accepté le fait que Sète est étrange. Et d’avoir, au lieu de tenter de lutter, su pactiser avec cette identité aussi profonde que déroutante.

You might be tempted to call these “Memories of Sète”. For this is in fact what they are: recollections of things that no longer exist and indeed existed only for a few days and nights spent criss-crossing every part of the town in search of… Of what, exactly? No doubt a little piece of Sète, undeniably a great deal of Juan Manuel Castro Prieto, and even more of an image. Or images.

To begin with there is this truly individual and unclassifiable town, which perhaps merits more than any other the unpredictability of being viewed, on a yearly basis, through the eyes of different photographers. It has the advantage, given its geographical diversity between the sea and the hills, of offering up a rare panoply of landscapes and playing host to people who seem to live just as they please: people of character, like the town itself in fact. For Sète really does have a character all its own, one which these photographers attempt to capture, endeavouring to decode its signs and enigmas, always finally finding what they are looking for and observing that, for all its multiplicity, the town strikes a chord with their own world.

Before the town, or to one side, stands a photographer who himself is certainly not short of character. One of these peerless technicians who, for all his lack of interest in technique, knows how to bend it to his desires, toy with it so as to open up rifts in the world and who is second to none in his ways of revealing them.

Revelation, for Castro Prieto, has always been as much about dreams as the manifestation of images. This man who has come to Sète is above all the same man who published “Extraños”, (‘strange things’), a book featuring a collection of visions at once unsettling and beautiful, collectively offering a skilful metaphor for photography itself.

In choosing to work in colour, using traditional photographic methods, with negatives, a large format camera, i.e. in drawing on the most precise and traditional techniques photography can offer, Juan Manuel Castro Prieto has equipped himself with tools which he applies, as is his wont, in a surprising range of ways. From factual statement to distortion, from refined documentary to the purely dreamlike. And he does not hesitate, with a pleasure underlying all his work, to cultivate the paradoxical.
To think of the colours of Sète is immediately to imagine as sun-drenched town, the depth of its blues, the purity of its whites, the most profound reds — a lush Mediterranean shoreline palette. And yet by way of contrast, this photographer offers us half-tones, vibrant, lulled and becalmed but never excluding the possibility of the loud and harsh, caught between two visions of the sea, rich blue and grey shades coming together to forge a material, impressionist and sensual world. Here we are far from those cameras used for precision and impeccable sharpness. But it is this very tool, used apparently against the grain, which gives us this sumptuous result.
Once the seaside setting is established, total freedom reigns. The photographer’s curiosity is free to wander, capturing two women chatting on their chairs on a sunlit pavement, or a crab’s claw hanging by a thread, ex-votos at the church of Notre Dame de la Salette, a joust in miniature, or a jumble of bric-à-brac marked “pains in the neck keep out”, not to mention an octopus drawn on the ground in rich materials and rare light. Because as we all know, there is no Sète without octopuses.

Just as unforgettable are the encounters and portraits, amongst others the series of young Sète artists in their workshops and the way they are used to construct a truly strange universe, half hoarding and half second-hand market, a mixture of memory and materialised dream, whimsy and work in progress, juxtaposed with the magical vision of a forgotten warehouse inhabited only by time and dust, a space dotted with objects which turn into characters and sculptures in their own right. Here too, the camera’s attention to the light and the way it is harnessed to create the world is disturbing, simultaneously projecting us into a world and keeping us at a distance through a game of illusions.
In painting his portrait of the city Juan Manuel Castro Prieto has discovered an endless series of existing, used or forgotten images, which he has recaptured in his own way, lending them new meaning. They turn, just like the footprints painted white on the ground, into landmarks of a sort, a way of telling us that image and sign are all that exist, that the town has to be read in the way it offers itself up, like a mystery to be solved. One of the strengths of his vision is that he has accepted Sete in all its strangeness and that, rather than struggling with it, he has come to terms with this identity, as deep as it is unsettling.
