The Sahel region has recently experienced political upheaval caused by the current rebellion in the north of Mali and by the creation, in June 2012, of an independent nation known as "Azawad." For several years, the introduction of cheap digital creation tools has led to a wave of ephemeral graphic images circulating via Facebook, cyber-cafés and mobile telephone chips. Questioning the concept of popular art and ethnography “Sahel Digital Art” presents these digital creations from West Africa collected across the country and on the Internet: homemade avatars; viral propaganda; imaginary geographies of non-existent states...
This attraction questions not only the role of new media and the democratisation of creative tools, but also the beauty of an open-minded inspiration. By using prefabricated 'templates' for PCs, automatic editorial tools available online and photo editing applications, and by subjecting their personal photos to superimposed graphics, the self-proclaimed designers of this new digital world unveil their unique aesthetics. Their identity is transformed and re-imagined in new forms, thus interpreting desires, hopes and fantasies into hyper-real statements — and utilizing a world of editing, digital distortion, diffraction and pixilation, with a coloured or even sometimes garish appearance. Many of the images presented here express a shared dream; a dream henceforth plunged into chaos with the taking of power by fundamentalist extremists.
